Maidstone Scullers Head 2005

Sunday October 9th

A beautiful Autumn morning saw 182 boats take to the crowded waters of Maidstone. There were three separate races scheduled to start at 10am, 11:30 and 1pm. Boats were either single sculls or double sculls.

An early start from Hastings was necessary!

A very encouraging note was the number of young people taking part with the host Club Medway Invicta and Kings Canterbury having many crews.

The Coast however was well represented with crews from Hastings, Dover, Bexhill, Folkestone, Shoreham and Worthing.

The Medway was crowded!. I have never seen so many other large cruisers belching out diesel and Chardonnay in all my life. It looked as if Formula 1 was being run on the M25 and in the wrong direction.

This was coupled with a large fishing contingent who I suspect are really frustrated farmers 'cos they are always moaning!

However further down thr river it was peaceful and even a kingfisher dashed by in between boats.

The four clubs below had several scullers entered.

Away from the centre of Maidstone the river looks very pretty at this time of the year.

The usual charge back up the river after each of the 3 divisions ended.

Craig after his third row and Emma eventually reached our landing site and clambered exhausted from the boat assisted by mum and dad.

THE END
