South Coast Championships Bideford !!
September 12th 2004

The most amazing point about this year's Championships was the fact that it actually was completed.!!!.

The rain, zephyr-like winds, sinking boats, my wet feet, poor to appalling light conditions, and temperatures hovering around 12 deg C all added up to a tough day both for competitors and spectators.

The Organisers should be congratulated especially the intelligent and attractive lady on the loud speaker system who managed to corral the troops throughout the day's erratic changes of race orders and interruptions.

Many of us met one of the other main organisers on the bank who seemed permanently confused and kept asking where the race was starting from and where it finished!. I guess you can't get the help these days!.

From a rowing point of view Hastings were disappointed not to win the Bideford Bowl. However we entered 4 crews this year and a great deal of experience was gained. Also over 34 members attended.

From Hastings Rowing Club we would like to thank Bideford Reds for the loan of their boats. It was much appreciated and judging by the many man (and woman) hours spent in their bar, was probably a good investment.

APOLOGY No 1. My intent was to take a pic of everyone. However it became so dark sometimes especially at the end that my camera automatically slowed down and the pix were blurred. Also my feet got wet plus I went to get a drink and have a pea. Sorry if you are missing..

Bideford Reds began to have second thoughts when they discovered some of the Junior IV mentioned they had never seen a river boat before!

Emergency safety measures were immediately instigated and a well organised search and rescue team placed on standby.

The first race included our Junior IV of Mr Ben Muggridge, Brian Hempstead, Steve Callar and Greg Duke plus Cox Fiona Knight.

APOLOGY No 2. To all those people in North Devon who we thought of as being a bit slow.

Yes before the race us 3 City slickers, Mr Jamie Hayden, Steve Barnard and myself decided to visit Clovelly. However all those generations of Incest and Clotted Cream has not dulled the sharpness of Clovellies' council and inhabitants. We managed to get caught into paying £12 to enter a public village!. And £6 to leave it!. Boy what a scam. I'm amazed Hastings Council who are always on the ear'ole for new money raising schemes haven't already put toll booths on either side of the A259 coast road and A21 from London!!

The Big decision!?
Should the Boys take the Alpha course to the right?
or the Beta course to the left?
The first 6 thousand correct answers get a fish!

The Veteran's Championship Race. Bideford Blues plough through the waves.
